What just happened in the Brandenburg election, and how will it affect German Politics?

The election on September 22, 2024 was the last in the current cycle of eastern German state elections. Just like in Saxony and Thuringia, which went to the polls three weeks earlier, the far-right AfD did very well and won almost one third of the vote.

Unlike in Saxony and Thuringia, the SPD also did very well. In a last minute swing, they pulled ahead of both the AfD and their erstwhile coalition partner, the Christian Democrats.

The outcome of the election obviously raises a lot of questions. The good people at Deutsche Welle have invited me to try and answer some of them.
